Shining Star - Mellissa Coyle

Passionate about children from an early age, our latest shining star has worked her way up over the past nine years, in the one centre, to be the very best educator she can be. Say hello to Lead Educator and Educational Leader at Kurrawatha Avenue Early Learning Centre, Mellissa Coyle.

Mellissa knew she wanted to work in early childhood from the very moment she started highschool. “I did all the early childhood classes and work placements in childcare centres,” she says.

Starting her paid career in 2010, Mellissa was a casual for two-three months at Kurrawatha Avenue Early Learning Centre before moving into the Lead Educator position in the Toddler Room.

Mellissa’s career pathway has been free flowing, but not without a lot of hard work. Starting as the casual-float, she became lead educator swiftly while she obtained her Diploma in Children’s Services.

“My family is my biggest support, followed closely by my Director, Centre Manager, Karina Dell and the educators in our centre,” she says.

“I love seeing the learning and development our educators take part in and how this in turn extends the children’s learning. It’s a pleasure to watch them achieve, it's my favourite aspect of the role.”

There are currently 19 children in the Junior Toddler Room with Mellissa but she works closely with the Toddler Room which has a further 22 children enrolled. The focus of Mellissa’s teaching is play and how important it is for the development of children.

Mellissa specifically loves to focus on natural play, and making sure children are exposed to their surrounding environment. Mellissa is also deeply proud of the centre’s work in their School Readiness Program, ensuring children are ready for their transition to ‘big school.’

“The educators I work with are amazing, and provide a wonderful support system, not just for the children, but also for families and fellow staff, says Mellissa”

“It’s such a special job thanks to the children and the families we engage with every day.”

Thank you Mellissa for bringing our Affinity values of ‘Going Above and Beyond’, ‘Delivering Outstanding Professionalism’ and ‘Living the Team Spirit’ to life!

Questions to ask on your family centre tour

When touring childcare centres for the first time it can be overwhelming.

As the saying goes, ‘first impressions’ count, but taking the time to ask deeper questions and really find out what your early education and childcare centre has to offer you and your child will always be time well spent.
